(no thats not mine, its a random picture off the net!)
  • Apart from the obvious "Pillarless Doors".................pass.

LOL, it was indeed the obvious!

Actually the Avantime has something in common with the Ferrari too, they're both renowned for having dodgy electrics ! (Though fortunately I've been lucky with both cars)
  • Ahh didn't spot that one - my next guess was going to be that both cars were "Very Clean"

"they're both renowned for having dodgy electrics"

Considering the complexity of the electronic systems on the Avantime I think it's quite reliable. Which particular parts of the electrics do you deem to be "dodgy"?

I think the plastic parts in the passenger compartment deserve that title first.
  • The CD player !! ;-)

Actually in all seriousness I've had no problem with mine other than that. Whenever anyone see's I've bought a Renault however its always the first thing they say, "OOOoo a Renault, that'll have dodgy electrics" so unfortunately it does get tarred with that brush even though we all know better!

Saying that the Renault reputation is well deserved, I had a Renault 5 Turbo years ago when I was 18, it was only a couple of years old and had a list of electrical faults as long as my arm! At least it wasn't as bad as the Renault 25 my father had at the time, it also had several electrical faults, the most annoying being that it repeated "Low Fuel" at your every few minutes in a monotone voice even though the tank was full, very annoying on a long drive!

The BMW 8 series has the same seats as the Avantime I think.
  • Not the same GavC but similar in that that seatbelt is mounted to the seat rather than the pillar (which neither car has!)
  • The CD "error" problem is actually a mechanical one
  • I have been tempted by an 8-series myself, but the fuel consumption on those things is truly frightening.. even compared to an Avantime!
  • You'd be surprised Dynamoo, on a run it'll give circa 33mpg, combined is about 25mpg and you get about 20mpg around town, not that far off what the 3.0 Avantime gives.

Fantastic car to drive, the one I have has about 115k miles and drives like a new car, tight as you like, cruises at 90mph at 2500 rpm!!!

Will be for sale in a few weeks too ;-)

  • This would be my ideal Avantime -(exception pack 2)
  • Any good leather restorer ought to be able to 'paint' the leather to your colour of choice, as shown in the attached article. There may be a problem near the seams though, as mentioned.

A Few weeks ago i went to a Bedford Rugby game and we were subjected to an agonising 1 point defeat.
Rolling back to the car with my mate moaning about the ref and the team and everything else and feeling pretty dejected with the world, i rounded the corner to where i'd parked and there it was sat; looking at me like my best mate asking if i fancied coming out for a beer!
I raised my camera which was still around my neck and just snapped a single shot. Either i'm a great photographer, or it is impossible for this car to look bad in a picture.
I love my car, it never fails to cheer me up when i know i'm about to jump in for a drive...

Nice shot Robert,. It wouldn't really work with my colour even if I knew how!

Above was taken at the Millau bridge earlier this year. Below is a snap of Phillipe Guedon at the launch of the Avantime in Romorantin.
  • Very nice Robert :-)

Yes love that, Robert, you and Mike should have made the sales brochure between you! This is just a happy snappy I took of Philippe Guedon at the Romorantin launch of the Avantime...

  • What a great weekend that was, with a swarm of Matra outside the Pyramid - magic. Must dig out the old photos for a bit of nostalgia.
  • Yep it was quite something. I've put an attachment on the bottom of the original post above, for those who can't see it embedded. Wish I could sort out this picture hosting malarky.
  • And as if by magic......................the picture returned.!

Here you go... Avantime and some other rust boxes!

    http://www.lexhag.co.uk/Avantime/rust_box_lineup.jpg
  • Is that an (infamous) Ford Pinto on the left? If so, has it got the design flaw that Ford tried to "brush under the carpet"? (poorly positioned fuel tank that would burst if the car was rear-ended whilst making a right hand turn, toasting the rear seat occupants)
  • No its an AMC Pacer. this had an unusual 3 speed garbox which had the gearchange in a form of triangle. Top left for 1st, across to 2nd and back down to 3rd, then back up to first. (can't remember where reverse was !) allround visibilty was excellent, but if it was a sunny day you were fried to death whilst driving.
  • Waynes world, waynes world, party time, excellent

I believe I'm correct, correct me if I'm wrong(?)

if it is have you ever driven down your local highstreet with bohemian rhapsody blasting?

Nice collection of unusual cars by the way :)

It certainly is a 1976 AMC Pacer. Unfortunately it has left the family as I managed to crack the windscreen and didn't fancy getting another imported.

It's automatic, so I didn't get to experience the quirky gearbox. But that's not to say its quirks stopped there. The passenger door is 3 inches longer than the drivers side, it weighs nearly two and half tons, because it's 37% glass and it was marketed as America's first "small" car. As you can see it isn't very small - it's short and wide (I think as wide as a Cadillac and as long as a golf) and has a 4.2L straight six which delivers a ridiculous 95bhp!

Fun to drive and a star at the shows and I would love to have another!
  • "America's first "small" car"

Had Herbie not hit their shores by then? The beetle looks dwarfed next to the others.
  • The beetle had been in the states for many years by 1976, but I think the Pacer was marketed as an "Small American Car".

From what I know the market research suggested that people wanted a small car to be as wide as their usual tanks and have a similar sized engine. Is was meant to be for house wife's and their shopping!
