  • Getting the gearstick gaiter off isn't too hard, you need to carefully slide the silver trim towards the back of the car (so pull from the bottom where it curves round), then it should come off, then you have access to the screws under the trim holding the panels of the centre console in place, unscrew them and hope you can get enough access to whatever might be wrong.
  • magic thanks, planning a look at dawn tomorrow (not that early at this time of year).
I suppose one of the cables is broken or detached in some way *touch wood*

  • This was not accessible without seat removal and is not revealed as shown in the image. Maybe my seats are not sliding forward the full way for some reason, or maybe the manual is a bit optimistic. Will try again tomorrow!
  • Oh dear, seems it is the selector fork, probably a pin sheared off, as in this (Audi) mechanic video. (skip to 10:50).
With the air filter mounting plate removed (see pic below - quite quick access) and wife moving the gearstick, both cables (inspected yesterday as intact looking) are performing as they should and shunting the external-to-gearbox-forks. Therefore, I must conclude it is something not happening inside. Car is 144000 miles so wear and tear is a reality. I made a video and showed our village mechanic who is a bit of a genius on the quiet and he agreed with the conclusion. He doesnt do gearboxes, so now I have to look for a specialist and hopfelly organise an exchange or parts breaker gearbox. Not a part I am capable of changing over on the drive so a big bill im
minent (2xgarages full of other objets-des-voitures). Will get the clutch done at the same time.

If you want to know or remind yourself about amnual transmissions this is a good start place.

    close up of the under-airbox-area

here is also a pic of the four seater Multimac rear seat

and also i took the seats and centre console out, mainly because it all needs a clean and easiest on a table top to feed the leather etc.

Finally, when I removed the wing mirror adjustment location it was smoking very slightly!!!!, you can see the label browned over about half an hour in these two images. :o

  • Interesting video!... thanks for that.

So the next job is a refurbished gearbox. There were a couple of secondhand ones on ebay, but wondering if that’s a too big a risk. My 2.0T gearbox is showing signs of wear at 90k.... so a secondhand one could be on the verge of needing a rebuild anyway. I would be interested in knowing the cost of refurbishment as it’s a job on my horizon too.
  • Where abouts are you in the country?

I have had Suffolk Transmissions (http://suffolktransmission.com/) recommended to me from an amazing garage (Whitehead & Sons, Kirtling, Newmarket) who have done a little bit of work on my Avantime and lots of work on my other cars Currently a friend is having his automatic transmission rebuilt on his Volvo 480 by Suffolk Transmissions.

He hasn't got the car back yet but he has had good service so far.

If that is too far, hopefully someone else can recommend a closer gearbox rebuilder for you instead

@Tempest Well yes agree, whether to go for refurbed or just replaced, it is a lottery on ebay i.e. no idea if the gearbox has the same fault inside or is about generate the same fault. Be gentle moving from first to reverse folks! Have checked and cleaned the gearbox stickers (which were falling off, by peeling them free, see pic below. Says PK6 everywhere but there seems to be a second number, which hopefully is not significant. Ebay gearbox likely to be ordered ..... PK6.
@James we have a gearbox specialist in Peterborough and Boston who have been contacted for a quote. The simplest route though is 1) buy used gearbox and (new) clutch parts 2) take to local person.
  • There remains the possibility of me doing it but i really doubt it.

Ah you're not too far from me then! I'm in Cambridge and have yet to have the joy of passing another Avantime!

Good luck with your gearbox i hope you get back on the road soon. Its nice to see an Avantime being used properly. Mine had a week of this when my sister visited and we were also posting a baby through the back window and travelling with full of passengers for once.

I have an excellent PK6 003 gearbox available and could also fit it but I’m at the other end of the country, or I could deliver the gearbox if you want to get it fixed locally.

Pk6 is the generic model of gearbox used in a myriad of vehicles. Its the 003 that is required for an Avantime and some lagunas. Selector forks are universal i made a post awhile ago about playing with my gearbox. Not that hard, time consuming and a couple of head scratching moments.

Thank you for all the replies BTW, much obliged.
Buggeration.... those last two messages came too late and i may have goofed. Have ordered a PK6 018 gearbox at 6pm (was only £100 + £30 but if it does not fit then not the bargain I thought. Should i cancel? Any reason why the PK6-018 versus PK6-003 other would not work? I suppose there are subtle differences/evolutions between them, some critical some not.

Have found a local mechanic who will do it for £300, as long as there is no subframe removal which I will check in the manual later. However, if he fits the wrong one (I bought) all a false economy and to be repeated!

Other thing to sort out is a new clutch part. Have taken out the centre console completely and giving it a proper clean which it despearetly needs. Im blaming wife/kids, in that order.
  • @Tempest, there are refurbed PK6-003s on ebay for £650-£750.

What about things like the speedo pickup? I know on some (older) Renault boxes the box has a manual drive for some cars and electronic output for others. Plus gear ratios can be different in the same family of box, particularly between petrol and diesel donor cars.

018 is a Laguna diesel box.
Can you live without the car for a day?
If so I would get the new box apart get your mechanic to remove and give you the box then swap the selector parts and replace the bearings as per my gearbox posts ( there are 2 relevant threads). Then give him the box to refit.

Diesel ratio and a low one at that it's slower than the Avantime Dci box

  • Wow great input thanks.
Regarding the electronic/mechanical speedo output - this is an excellent I will ask the question of the seller. That would be a deal breaker. Is the Avantime an electronic output? Is this the TDC mentioned in the fairly scant instructions on gearbox removal (section 21 service manual).

Regarding the lower ratios, Im not seeing a downside living in the flat Fens where sixth gear is in use at 50 mph which seems too early IMO, that should be a motorway gear only. Gear ratios have been wrong for about forty years IMO and only recently got realistic for fuel economy/engine wear. Having said that I am already running tyres on the large size (no rubbing issues and larger sidewall for more comfort) which have resulted in the speedo reading eactly correctly versus the satnav (1mph in it at 70mph). I suppose if the next owner is travelling on the M62 daily they will need to use fifth alot. The reality of our economic plan for the car is to minimise cost and run it realistically as a near 150000 mile nearly 19 year old family car. I appreciate if you are keeping the car long term and it is in collectable condition, then a refurbished gearbox makes the most sense, but in our situation an exchange gearbox seems the best option to punt into a @£2k car.

  • Going off thread. What size tyres are you running for more comfort?.
  • No subframe removal necessary to swap the gearbox.
  • Cheers both, yes i clipped down the service manual to print out for the mechanic, and it is surprisingly "brusque" shall we say, doesnt even mention seperating the gearbox from the engine, perhaps that is in the clutch removal section. No subframe. I suppose by using the 120hp TD gearbox that leaves the original one on a table top for the next owner to refurbish at their leisure. IMO sixth should be a proper high speed cruise overdrive.
Cleaned the interior and tarted up the centre console. Some bits hadd the rubbery skin, some not. Some of the skin peeled off easily, but on the gaitor surround I had to sand it off. The "Dynamique" interior on mine has a faux composite foil on the trim piece but this has worn spots. It all got sprayed with a can of Black Silk paint and a light dab of wax. The seats have been cleaned and "fed".

    Cheap labour for interior cleaning

seats out on dining room table for a clean

    centre console tarting

    cleaned

horrid rubber coating on gearstick surround

    easily peeled parts

    inset trim items

    silk black spraying

Finally the tyres im running were,
    Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance 225/55 R17 101 W XL
    Price per pc. incl.VAT: £94.00 Quantity: 4
    Total price (with VAT): £376.00

Since replaced (front only) Jinyu at £60.83 each.
These have a B wet grip rating.
  • oh yes, and here is the burnt out connector for the mirror adjustment, could have been worse if it had spread. Clipped off the wires from the connector and insulated them.

  • the light coloured parts of your interior look to be in grey not beige.... is that one of the rare factory options?.
  • Does your daddy know you're doing all this?

    😂😂😂
  • what do the cognescenti think is a good clutch, im fairly baffled by the options....

    dynamique interior **oOOOOoooooOOOooo**
  • Exedy make a good clutch... but dunno if they do one for the Avantime.

Is the car trim grey or beige?.
  • grey trim
  • found this in my ebay meanderings, so maybe one day to follow GIBs gearbox refurb, though I doubt it now we are turning into Fenland's "Von Trapps".............

The LUK clutch named in the manual seems a bit pricey to say the least

Had to drive to the hospital this morning, only 3rd and 4th gear working, not sure what has happened to 5 & 6. Went smoothly, but never again. Booked in for thursday and still hunting for a clutch to order! this looks cheaper

  • OK panic over, wasnt really using the correct search words

  • grey trim

Wonder how rare that is with the dynamique trim?.
